this is the workout I did 2 days after Ogden Marathon.
I am positive that after any other marathon I've done I wouldn't even thought doing squats was possible, let alone HEAVY squats.
It's because of CrossFit.
I know I was (and still am) unhappy with my performance at Ogden.
But I did realize a few things after the race (and during).
It was never my legs that were hurting.
Sure, my feet were sore and I had a moment when I thought my calves were going to start cramping, but they never did.
My legs were NOT the problem.
My chest cramping/weird constriction/not breathing was the problem.
As soon as I crossed the finish line and saw my Mom, I just collapsed on the ground into a puddle of tears.
But when it was time to get up and I mentally prepared myself for that God-awful, every leg muscle is locked up, feeling... but it never came. I could get up and down with out major pain.
When we got back to the hotel room and I was explaining to my Mom that I just wasn't sore like I used to be... I even did a few air squats, just to see if I could. And I noticed my hamstrings were tight, but not unbearable.
It's because of CrossFit.
At work on Monday, I tackled the stairs without problems.
Any marathon runner knows what a B!TCH stairs can be (for DAYS) after a marathon.
Most of us have go down the stairs backwards or sideways.
Nope. Not I.
When my Mom and I went to lunch that day and were walking down the stairs and I got down without any problems, she looked at me and said, "Seriously?!"
It's because of CrossFit.
I know my time was far from what I am capable of doing.
I know that I can run faster.
I know that this marathon is not my best.
(and I will do another... some day)
But my body has NEVER bounced back like this after a race. EVER.
I went to CrossFit every day the week after the Marathon.
and I LOVED it.
I KNOW that CrossFit changed my body for the better.
and will CONTINUE to change my body in the months (& years) to come.
It's made me STRONG.
and I will get STRONGER.
I know a lot of my runner friends may not understand what this "CrossFit" business is about.
and specifically question what CrossFit Endurance is all about.
WELL... all my runner friends... Runner's World (which is like the runner's bible) has an article outlining why every runner should try CrossFit and CrossFit Endurance.
some of my favorite parts:
"All that heavy lifting can translate to distance running. For one, it increases the force of your stride—the more powerful your push-off, the less effort you exert with each stride, the easier fast running feels, says Stephen S. Cheung, Ph.D., professor of kinesiology at Brock University in Ontario. "It also makes you more balanced and likely less prone to injury," he says."
I know a few girls right now who are dealing with overuse injuries.
"It may also make you faster. In one study, highly trained runners who substituted almost a third of their running workouts with explosive, sport-specific strength training shaved 30 to 40 seconds off their 5-K times after nine weeks compared with those who ran and did minimal strength training."
I know you've heard of HIIT training. this is it.
CrossFit is IT!
Try Box Jumps and Double Unders!
Anything Tabata style...
"There are no easy days or recovery runs in CFE. You're either on or you're off. "The act of taking real rest might be enough to help many runners improve performance," says Gibala. "You have runners going out for these recovery runs, but they're just making themselves tired. You're better off reducing the total training load, getting rid of the junk, and getting real rest.""
I am a FIRM believer in rest days now.
I used to run 6, sometimes 7 days, a week.
I got burnt out doing that and CrossFit.
When I run now, it means something.
Every run has a purpose.
I'm trying to avoid junk miles.
Anyways... PLEASE go read the article.
You may understand a little bit more about why I LOVE CrossFit and CrossFit Endurance.

I know a few girls right now who are dealing with overuse injuries.
If you can build up your strength, while building up mileage and speed, you can avoid injury.
Some great strength exercises are Deadlifts and Squats.

I have been wanting to try Crossfit basically since I first heard of it, but have still never made it there. I think I'm just scared that I won't be strong enough to get through the workout! I'm trying to convince my bf to go with me for moral support! Thanks for the awesome info!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, LOVE! I love running and the amazing things it has done for me. But I also love squats and jerks and snatches and although I will never say I love box jumps or burpees- I love what they do for me. I love that crossfit works muscles that running never will, but that I can use when I run. I love that crossfit teaches me to be a bad ass. I love that I can do it back to back days without getting injured. I love that I don't have to spend all day doing it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love that you love crossfit.
Sounds like I need to get Crossfit added to my regime. That picture of you squatting by the way...IMPRESSIVE!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to add Crossfit to my list! I swear I can hear it calling my name! ;)
ReplyDeleteI have tried CrossFit and loved it. As a runner, I can totally see the benefits. I think I worry, though, that it will make me too sore to really get what I need out of my runs? You encourage me with this, though!
ReplyDeleteLove Crossfit...I'm a huge fan. You are right...they have great benefits!
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I think that cross training is so vital to all around improvement in ALL types of physical fitness. I have been doing GPP workouts (similar to crossfit but not quite) for two months and feel like a new person!
ReplyDeleteGREAT post. alllll the more reason I MUST join a Crossfit box. like yesterday
ReplyDeleteGlad you are on the path to a STRONG recovery. Keep it up and great job!
ReplyDeleteLOVE THIS. I feel like, Crossfit is DEFINITELY something I would try in the future. For now, I will be a secret admirer. That picture of you ROCKS!!
ReplyDeleteyou go girl! that's amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteI know everybody is different, but I think moderation in everything is basically my new motto in life. I can agree with rest days/junk mileage/ and even crossfit helping prevent injury. I'm actually reading a book by Athlete runner Kara Goucher who talks specifically about all of these topics. :) It's important to train, and to get your miles in.. but there comes a point where are you running for a number? Or are you running to improve. Running is so good for you and endorse it 100% but Running can take over someones life if you let it. So I think it's good to get involved with other healthy activites like cross fit. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteI have heard so many amazing tings about CrossFit. I just haven't had the opportunity to try it out yet. I think I even have my boyfriend interested in trying it out. It is definitely on my Bucket List!
ReplyDeleteGreat perspective on things, I always knew cross training was important, but reading your view I can see why people are getting into CrossFit. I'm a lil nervous to try it myself, but I am also massively new to that style of training.
ReplyDeleteI have tried Crossfit and loved it but due to time and money have not been able to continue with at this time. Thanks for sharing your story and you look awesome sautéing all that weight!!!
ReplyDeletei want to try crossfit so freaking badly!! and you are a bad ass for throwing that weight around so soon after you mary!! great job ash!!
ReplyDeleteThat picture is so freaking bad ass! Love it! I am reading at work and all of my employees are like whoa who is that? Just my badass friend yo! haha!
ReplyDeleteI love that you are so passionate about cross fit. My personal opinion is that everyone is different and you have to find what works for you and go with it. You rock girl!
I have been dying to try Crossfit. This makes me want to do it even more now.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!! Just goes to show just how important any kind of strength training is! One of these days I'll work up the courage to try out Crossfit...
ReplyDeleteI love those bitches: Helen, Cindy, Barbara and Fran.
ReplyDeleteI am a runner and started Crossfit this morning!! The price tag has kept me away. I can't justify it, as a SAHM. I have a 3 month groupon membership.
